Jesuit Media Australia
About Us

Our Story

The media arm of the Australian Jesuit Province, publishing since 1897.

Who We Are

A Media Organisation Built on Mission

Jesuit Communications (Jesuit Media) was established in 2005 as the media arm of the Australian Jesuit Province, bringing together a publishing tradition that stretches back to 1897. We serve the Catholic Church and provide communications support for the Jesuit Province Office.

Rooted in Ignatian spirituality — finding God in all people, places, and things — our mission is to engage in dialogue, promote human dignity, advocate for social justice, and support the life of the Church in Australia.

Today, Jesuit Media operates four major publications — Eureka Street, Australian Catholics, Madonna Magazine, and Pray.com.au — reaching over 500,000 Australians every month.

Our Values

What Guides Us

Dialogue & Engagement

We present ideas grounded in Catholic thinking to a broad audience, encouraging discernment and thoughtful conversation in today's complex world.

Human Dignity

We are committed to maintaining a respectful public conversation — especially in a polarised media landscape — that upholds the dignity of every person.

Social Justice

In the Jesuit tradition, we advocate for and stand in solidarity with the poor and marginalised, giving voice to those who are often unheard.

Support for the Church

We provide communications support for the Jesuit Province Office and the wider Catholic Church, helping communities stay connected and informed.

Ignatian Spirituality

A Spirituality for Everyday Life

Founded by St Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, the Jesuit tradition offers a practical, world-engaged approach to faith — one that shapes everything Jesuit Media creates.

Ignatian contemplation
Go forth and set the world on fire.
— St Ignatius of Loyola, 1491–1556

Who was Ignatius?

A Spanish soldier turned mystic, Ignatius of Loyola founded the Society of Jesus after a profound conversion experience. His Spiritual Exercises — a structured programme of prayer and reflection — remain one of the most influential spiritual texts in Christian history, practised by millions worldwide today.

Finding God in All Things

Ignatius taught that the divine is present in every person, place, and experience — not only in churches or formal prayer. This conviction drives Jesuit Media to engage with culture, politics, and everyday life as sacred ground.

The Examen

A daily practice of prayerful reflection — pausing to notice where you felt most alive, most drained, and what that reveals about God's movement in your day. It's the heartbeat of Ignatian life, and the spirit behind our Daily Prayer service.

Discernment

Rather than rigid rules, Ignatian spirituality trusts individuals to weigh their choices carefully, attend to their deepest desires, and act for the greater good. It's a spirituality of freedom, not fear.

Contemplatives in Action

Jesuits are not cloistered monks — they are sent into the world. The Ignatian ideal is a person whose inner life of prayer overflows into active service: in schools, hospitals, media, and wherever people are in need.

Community in reflection

Ignatian spirituality isn't just for Jesuits — it's for anyone seeking a deeper, more reflective way of living.

Our Roots

Part of the Australian Jesuit Province

Jesuit Communications is the media and publishing ministry of the Australian Jesuit Province, the regional body of the Society of Jesus — one of the world's largest Catholic religious orders, founded by St Ignatius of Loyola in 1540.

The Society of Jesus has been present in Australia since 1848, working in education, social services, spirituality, and advocacy. The Australian Province today encompasses Jesuits serving across Australia, New Zealand, and Timor-Leste.

Everything Jesuit Communications produces — from Eureka Street's social commentary to Australian Catholics' parish resources — flows from the Jesuit commitment to finding God in all things and serving the greater good.
